The most widespread version of open composting is the windrow composting on paved surface. Depending on the treated material, location and plant, additional measures for emission protection can be necessary:

- Positive or negative aeration
- Limitation of the windrow size
- Treatment of leachate
- Static or dynamic windrows
- Turning technology and interval
